Dean’s Welcome
A hearty welcome to the homepage of University of Debrecen Faculty of Music.
Since 1966 our faculty has been one of the most important institutions of Hungarian tertiary education of music, having an essential role in both national and international training of performers and teachers of music. In 2014 the faculty celebrated the 40th anniversary of the inauguration of its present building and student hostel. Almost 100% of our graduate students find positions at institutions of Hungarian music education, theatres, television and radio stations, cultural establishments, having the chance to put their acquired knowledge and skills to practice. There is hardly any professional ensemble in Hungary where you could not meet at least one of our former students.
Beside individual work, students have the possibility to make music or perform at concerts together in the symphony orchestra, choirs, chamber, string and percussion ensembles, wind or guitar orchestras. Apart from demanding high level classes of well-known professors and artists, the faculty provides a great number of extracurricular activities: masterclasses, national and international meetings, competitions, but we also remember to organise entertainment programs. Within the frames of Erasmus program our students can study at numerous partner institutions abroad. The Pedagogy Doctoral Program –run together with University of Debrecen Faculty of Arts- provides possibilities to obtain a doctor’s degree, its profile having been extended with research in music pedagogy.
For over a decade Young Musicians’ Summer Academy has been the biggest event of the region’s educational and cultural scene, providing Hungarian and foreign students with a chance to practise and deepen their knowledge. The orchestral masterclass of the Academy is led by Vásáry Tamás, Artist of the Nation, Kossuth Award winning pianist-conductor, Honorary Citizen of Debrecen and Doctor Honoris Causa of Debrecen University.
Our students can pride themselves on outstanding results at Hungarian and international competitions and CD recordings. Their excellent musical skills are also welcome at concerts abroad. For our most talented students extra support is available through Gulyás György College for Advanced Studies.
Our concert series – Conservatory Evenings, Universitas Debrecen Series, youth concerts – provide a colourful cultural scene for children and adults alike. A collaboration with cultural and musical institutions of Debrecen help our future graduate students find positions and organise artistic programs.
